What kind of coffee are you?

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has seen this around, but I thought it would be fun to see how Texas Coffee People score.

What Kind of Coffee Are You?

I’m an Espresso… apparently. I certainly do have a high addiction to caffeine. I’d like to think I have better crema, though. :/

The USBC results are in!

With a side of controversy… as usual.

1st Heather Perry
2nd Pete Licata
3rd Matt Riddle
4th Chris Deferio
5th Kyle Glanville
6th Peter Middlecamp

Heather Perry wins her second national title. Peter Middlecamp of Black Sheep in St. Paul, MN is a first time competitor… and he made it all the way to the finals. What an accomplishment! I was glad to see Deferio’s name in the list, and it’s good to know that the defending champ can get close to a second win. On the other hand, where are the favorites? No Phoung Tran, no Billy Wilson, no John Lewis anywhere in sight on the list of finalists.

The word on the street is that the middle group of the middle machine was having some issues. Out of three incidents, two were considered technical error, with allowed “do-overs”. One wasn’t. all were due to the same reason.. the same group, the same machine.

I will be happy when we can go through a USBC without controversy. It’s draining on me, and I haven’t even competed.

In any case, Congrats to our new USBC Champion Heather Perry who will be representing the United States at the World Barista Championship in Tokyo.

Instant Coffee

May 7, 2007 · Filed Under Coffee · Comment

It’s been around since 1901 when it was invented by a chemist in Chicago. The freeze-dried variety wasn’t invented until the late 30′s, and while this is an improvement over heat-drying, quality is compromised. And no wonder, considering that coffee is the most chemically complex food item consumed by humans on the planet Earth.

This brings me to the next question. Knowing what you know now about coffee, and how easy it is to just brew a cup with a Melitta pourover if there’s not time for anything else, would you drink instant coffee?

In your mind, is it a lost cause? Is there hope for genuine quality freeze-dried in a jar? Taster’s Choice seems to think so, but what company doesn’t believe in their own product?

Would you or wouldn’t you. That’s the question.

SCAA in Long Beach

Who’s there?

I’m looking forward to seeing some pictures from those who are fortunate enough to have made it. There is a Flickr group specifically for that purpose.

Unfortunately, I am not among those people this year. Maybe next year.

Who will win the USBC this year? The semi-finals are afoot. Lots of familiar names in the list. Who will take the gold?

What’s more, what will this year’s “best new product” be? I wonder if there are any surprises this year. New products? Up and coming companies?
