Coffee N Cream: McKinney, TX
I received an email from John Ennen, who owns a shop in McKinney called Coffee N Cream.
Coffee N Cream sent one of their baristas to compete in the 2007 SCAA South Central Regional Barista Competition, which might be something worth mentioning. Usually shops don’t sponsor such things unless they care a bit about quality.
They serve coffee and ice cream as well. (in case you couldn’t tell by the logo)
The combination seems to be a growing concept. Slowly, but surely, I see more popping up here and there.
John has this to say,
We are an upscale coffee shop, with 2 locations in Collin County…one in McKinney, in historic Downtown McKinney, and the other in Allen. We are opening a third shop in Allen this fall, and have plans for two more in Dallas in ‘09.
We feature some of the finest TX roasted coffee that can be found. We serve it with exacting standards and engaged baristas. Our menu of food items is unparalleled in the industry, with food sales more than twice the national average as a percentage of sales.
We cater to those who wish to “get away”, not “drive thru”. Those who want a place to come to, “N”-joy, relax and “N”-dulge themselves.
Come visit us sometime soon. Thanks!!
It is not known which roaster they source their coffee from. Has anyone been there, or tried it out?

WBC on Espresso Bar: Tracking Industry Competitions and Events
This is a great new probject from a gentleman named Mads-Ole Bak who lives in Denmark. The concept is to have all information about all national competitions all over the country consolidated into just one easy to find and navigate location. Brilliant!
He had this to say:
The purpose of the site is to make a thorough coverage of all the competitions that will be going on during the SCAE Wonderful Coffee exhibition in Copenhagen this summer.
We will have access to the competitions and SCAE have agreed to cooperate with us during the event, so we (hopefully) can make a very interesting site for everyone who would like to follow the competitions but are not able to be in Copenhagen.
In addition to the World championships, we would also like to collect a lot of information about all the national competitions. It has proven pretty difficult to find out who won the national championship. So we hope that some of you would like to help us if you know anything about national competitions that we should bring on WBConEspressoBar.
Please feel free to visit the site, register in our forum and post any information you might have in the “National Chapters” forum
We hope that you will find our site interesting and that we will be able to bring you a lot of good stuff during the competitions in June.
For some reason, national coffee associations have a hard time making competition information as easy to find as it could be.
It’s high time something like this came along.

Coffee Kisses: a novel idea
I received an email from a Mr. Robert Keller who happens to make and sell an interesting product.
Robert writes,
Hello Texas,
I want to be a friend of TCP. I have a coffee related product. I created a plug, learned how to manufacture it and now make them in California. True I am not a Texan but I do have friends and family that are Texan.
Kind Regards
Robert Keller
AttPlay Solutions
He calls them Coffee Kisses, but they look an awful lot like other products I’ve seen in the past.
The only real difference I can see is that these look to be a lot lower profile than other varieties I’ve seen.

Texas Turner
I received an email from Mr. John Van Domelen.
He wanted to let everyone know about his line of wood-turned espresso tampers.

Many years ago my grandfather Paul R. Smith introduced me to turning on the lathe. I am at the point in my life that I have the time to rediscover the joy of creating handcrafted wood items.I use the lathe as the primary tool in the creation of my art and craft. Further work is sometimes done off the lathe. I may carve, burn, texture and dye some pieces in order to further bring forth the beauty in the wood.
I enjoy sharing the process of creation and hope that by sharing it another generation will carry on the art and craft of wood turning.
I love working with wood; how it feels, how it smells. Above all, I derive great joy in taking this gift of nature and adding the human touch to create beauty.
A Note on Wood
I use many rare tropical hardwoods in the creation of my items. When possible I buy small pieces of wood and cutoffs that otherwise might be discarded. I feel this best uses this natural treasure. I also use a substantial amount of what I call reclaimed lumber. New housing developments and tree trimmers have been great sources for this wood that would otherwise clog our landfills. I have a vested interest in forest conservation and work toward a balance in the stewardship of this resource.

Free Coffee Cupping at Brown: San Antonio, TX
Come on out and see us. It’ll be a fun time. If you’re a coffee professional you are especially welcome. FYI…the flyer’s a little hard to read. The map says we are on N. Zarzamora Road at King’s Hwy, just south of Fredericksburg Road. Here’s another map link, just in case.

BubbleHead Tea: San Antonio, TX
I saw this bit in the forum from contributor Aaron Blanco, and thought it should have been posted here instead.
The following is in his words:
_________________________________________________________________________________________
Okay, it’s no surprise I’m into coffee. Duh. More broadly, though, my wife and I are simply beverage lovers of all kinds. She gets into tea and mate’ and concocting all sorts of combos like that.
One of our weaknesses is bubble tea (or “pearl” or “boba” tea, if you please). Austin has a couple decent places including the famed Momoko on 24th…tea brewed fresh to order; real fruit chunks, etc. But Austin is 90 miles away and it’s hard to justify swimming up there just for that.
So my wife and were thrilled to hear that there’s a new place in San Antonio’s Lavaca neighborhood that serves a range of (generally Asian) beverages, including bubble teas. (They also have hookahs, fyi, if you’re into that sort of thing.) It’s called Bubblehead and it’s a very cool place. Yes, they serve coffee, too; but I haven’t even tried that yet on two trips there.
The boba are nearly ideal in texture and size. My first visit they seem to have been soaking in sauce a little too long as they were bloated beyond the diameter of the straw. But they were still tasty; and to me soaked-too-long boba is way, way better than undercooked/undersoaked boba.
Anyways, I went there one day to check it out at Jason from Cafe Gallo’s insistence and the very next day I had to bring my wife. Yes! Good bubbles in San Antonio! And in Lavaca, a part of town that is redeveloping and growing and turning into a quietly desirable neighborhood. Jason’s Gallo isn’t very far from there and I think it’s safe to say the area is filling in nicely with some decent gnosh spots too.
Anyways, just wanted to toss that out there in case any of you other coffee fiends also have a secret soft spot for bubbles.

Their website states that they are using Cuveé Coffee, and I know that when they were opening, they received some top class consulting as well.
Strangely, I haven’t heard anything about them from anyone whose ever been there. This seems to be a problem pretty common around here. Where are the consumers?!
Wise Words from the Ancients
This is something that I feel most of us can identify with.
A statement by the originator of modern academics:
With regard to excellence, it is not enough to know, but we must try to have and use it. – Aristotle
“I am not a paper cup…”
Taken from Barista Exchange.
I was poking around bX (that’s Barista Exchange, for you folks) today and came across this lovely little gem.
Now, normally, I’m not so hop in “permanent” cups that are made to resemble “temporary” cups, but the fact that this is a functional permanent to-go cup made of CERAMIC really got my attention. (more-so than the catchy name)
Double walled; thermal porcelain cup with silicone top. Eco-friendly and reusable. Dishwasher safe. This product retails at approximately $20/piece. If you would like more information or to purchase this product- please email : info@dcigift.com.
Pretty cool!
I think this may be a good option for retailers, as I don’t think it would be too difficult to get a logo on there somewhere. Of course, I don’t know for sure, so don’t just take my word for it.
If I saw one with a logo from my favorite retailer, I believe I’d have to purchase one. ;o)
