Randome Picture Friday #6: Barista

Grande nonfat mocha with a single shot? Or tall soy cappuccino with a double-shot?
Match the beverage shown on a roll of dice to make the perfect cup and win! But wait…other players can force you to spill your drink order, or they can change the drink order and mess up your hand! Or maybe a player is closer to finishing the drink order than you are and calls a Barista challenge. (More…)

Crooked Tree Coffee House Now Serving Oak Cliff Coffee
Since late January, Crooked Tree Coffee House in Dallas has begun serving coffee roasted by Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters.
As taken from the Oak Cliff Coffee Blog:
Beginning next week, The Crooked Tree Coffeehouse in Uptown will be serving fresh roasted coffee from Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters. The Crooked Tree opened last summer and it is run by two ladies (Sarah and Kristyn) who are passionate about coffee and people.
They were using a roaster on Colorado whose name I cannot recal. (and they may still be using them as well)
Congrats to Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters for the new account! (and for going full time!)

The Pearl Cup
1900 N. Henderson Ave
(On the corner of Henderson Ave and McMillan Ave)
The Pearl Cup is running coffee from Coffee Eiland (no website.. get on that, Clay!) in Dallas, along with Mazzer grinders and a La Marzocco Linea. Allegedly, they are offering single origin espresso. At least, that’s what I’ve heard.
The setup (La Marzocco + Mazzer + Coffee Eiland) REALLY reminds me of Gachet Coffee Lounge downtown near the House of Blues. I was not impressed with the coffee at Gachet, but I’m guessing inconsistency is the fault that plagues us all (including Gachet), as what is to blame. It wasn’t bad, but I felt it could have been better.
But, this is a whole new beast, headed by a band of three friends bent on bringing better coffee to Dallas. (or so it seems)
They have a website, which can be found at http://thepearlcup.com, and a page on Facebook. (link on their website)

Random Picture Friday #5: Caffeine Jitters

Many people are already aware that coffee can be composted, and that many plants that prefer acidic soil thrive on the stuff, and that it is rich in nitrogen.
Many coffee houses (Starbucks included) will give away their spent pucks to be used in their customers’ gardens. It won’t make your plants jittery from the neurological effects of caffeine (among other stimulants), but it will make them blossom with joy.
I dump every full knock box into the garden. (better that than in a landfill)
Where do your grounds go?

GREEN COFFEE BEANS & BAGS OF LUMP CHARCOAL – A GREAT START
I received an email mentioning Rodak’s Coffee and Grills in Ft. Worth.
If this doesn’t say “Texas” and “Coffee”, I don’t know what does.

The story seems pretty interesting, and the slogan at the top of the website says it best:

Coffee™ version “Lekempte and Limu”
(source|Reuters)
Ethiopia to trademark two more coffee brands
ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) – Ethiopia said on Tuesday it planned to obtain trademark rights for two coffee brands, originating in its Limu and Lekempte regions, to ensure the fine beans are sold only by licensed distributors.
Africa’s biggest grower already has trademark rights with global companies for its finest coffee brands; the Yirgacheffe, Sidamo and Harar coffees that are grown in the eponymous regions…
…”Ethiopia has been able to open new markets for its specialty coffees in India, China and Russia after the country secured property rights for its coffee,” Alemu said.
It has also signed agreements with over 70 global companies to promote its coffees, he said in a statement.
The trademarks would hopefully enhance the value of Ethiopian coffee to $8 per kilo compared with $2 presently, he said…
…The leading buyer of Ethiopian coffee is Germany, followed by Saudi Arabia, Japan, the United States and the Netherlands….more.
Does this really do much good? Does the mere act of putting a trademark on something somehow make it inherently more valuable, even if only in perceived value?
I don’t know. They’ve done this with other regions already, and it sparked a fair bit of commotion. What are your thoughts?

Houston Coffee Retailer Doubles Clientele with Twitter
Who knew?
I stumbled across this piece via arizona-coffee.com
Source: Mr. Tweet
When J.R. Cohen, Operations Manager for CoffeeGroundz (@coffeegroundz) Cafe in Houston, Texas first heard about Twitter from one of his customers, he was puzzled but intrigued. Today, he credits Twitter with almost doubling his clientele and with opening his eyes to a whole new way to build Community.
…Shortly after joining Twitter, Cohen started following members of the local Houston Twitterati and in no time had amassed over 1000 followers. Cohen is a naturally charismatic, giving, and friendly guy – traits that make him a natural on a network like Twitter….
![]()
…On October 31st, 2008 Sean Stoner (@maslowbeer) was hungry. As a regular customer at CoffeeGroundz he sent the following Twitter to Cohen:
![]()
Cohen quickly replied and Sean went through the drive-thru at CoffeeGroundz to pick up his burrito.
This simple exchange got a lot of coverage on Twitter and was hailed as potentially the first time that Twitter had ever been used to place a To-Go Order. more…
I’m not really sure what to think about this. It’s not direct, but it seems like its saying that a guy increased his business by turning his specialty coffee retailer into a fast food joint, though that’s from an article written by someone who doesn’t work in the business. That having been said, I could be wrong!
Have any of you Houston readers been there?
How many readers are on Twitter?
Instant Coffee: Sign of the times?
Starbucks to begin selling instant coffee
Full Story | San Francisco Chronicle

Varma said Starbucks will offer details of the new instant coffee, reportedly called Via, beginning next week. Samples will be arriving in stores on Wednesday, he said.
Great.. Instant Starbucks. Sounds.. hmm.. I’m not sure how that sounds.
Howard Schultz plans to make the announcement tomorrow, with the product ending up on shelves sometime this week. They are also working on a “value breakfast pairing for $3.95″. (See Starbucks Newsroom article)
They’ve denied it not too long ago, but I think now it’s safe to call it official.
The siren has lost its soul. Some refer to McDonald’s in making sense of this, but not in the way that you think.
McDonald’s is not in the restaurant or burger business. They are in the real estate business, and they happen to run restaurants too.
Starbucks is not in the coffee business. They are in the lifestyle business. They sell status imagery via coffee. When the customers can no longer afford to buy status imagery, or when they no loner see the value in it, the company is bound to shrink.
The question is this. How bad is the situation for Starbucks?
