Okay, so the picture looks like tea.. because it is tea.  But there are two versions!

Suck Your Coffee

This gadget is a new materials (and uses) approach to the classic bombilla used for enjoying yerba maté.

How useful is it?  To be honest, I don’t rightly know.  It may be a good way to brew a cup with limited supplies on hand, but I’m not so sure you’d reach the bottom of the before the luscious liquid became bitterly over-extracted.

It might be good if you’ve ever had a glass filter vacuum brewer stall on you.  You can pull up on the filter and let the whole coffee water slurry fall into the lower vessel, pour yourself a cup of the muddy water, and sip away.

If nothing else, it sure makes for a great Random Picture Friday!

Have a Great Weekend!

New Tech in the World of Coffee

I was looking through some Flickr updates, when I come across this interesting looking machine that reminds me of a Clover, and some experiments I’d seen done over at Jim Seven regarding water measurment by weight, rather than volume.

Well, here it is.  The Marco Uber Boiler.  It’s been situated to deliver water at temperatures of .2C precision by weight into whatever vessel of your choice.  Precise temperature, precise measurement, both in a neat in-counter package.  This does what Clover couldn’t.(just my opinion)

It’s not in production yet, and James says, “For those interested I’d recommend e-mailing Marco, and they will keep those interested up to date on the boiler.”(via) Click Here for the full report from James Hoffmann.

The next bit of tech for the coffee industry is an espresso machine project that I’ve been following for awhile, but was just recently finished into a functional prototype.  It has since made quite a splash, and it has gotten more attention.  It is the Slayer Espresso machine.

It’s low, it’s sleek, it has exposed group heads, it has steam wands and levers that remind one of Synesso, it boasts temperature control/stability, exposed paddle group heads, and… pressure profiling control?

I know that La Marzocco has released their paddle machine (which, btw, Cuvee was one of the first to have acquired), and it has made a splash, but not in the same way as this one.  Maybe it’s because it is from an independent, rather than from a prestigious manufacturer with a long history.  Maybe it’s because they’ve been blogging about its progress since it began.  Or, maybe it’s because it was developed from the same folks who started Treuh, except for Mark Barnett, who went on to found Synesso.

Either way, this piece of espresso tech holds a lot of promising potential.  Also not in production yet, I’ll be keeping an eye on this one for updates on its progress.

That’s all the news for today!  I’m sure that’s more than enough to hold you over for awhile.

Buon Giorono Coffee: Grapevine, TX

buongironocoffee

I received an email yesterday asking to have Buon Giorno Coffee to our list of roasters and retailers.

David writes,

Hi,

I am the owner of a successful Coffee House and In store roasting operation in Grapevine, TX, I would like to be included on the site.  I have been roasting for 5 years altogether and have a growing loyal customer base for my in store roasted coffee beans.

David Clarke

To be honest, I thought it was already added!  Whoops!

I have not yet visited Buon Giorno, but I have heard good things. The drink descriptions on their Menu seem promising!

As you can see, they roast in-house.  They have live music on the weekends, and offer Free WiFi.

Buon Giorno has been added to our list of Roasters, and our list of Retailers.

EVERYWHERE!!!

And while they have cut back their plans to open 200 new stores down to 120, they have plans to close down 300 additional stores since the last decision to close down about 600 stores.  (source)

While it may seem like the independents are winning, keep your eyes open.  Starbucks didn’t get where they are from being unattentive.  EEK!

Jobs: Looking for work in Austin

February 2, 2009 · Filed Under Austin, Barista, Jobs, TX-Coffee · Comment

I got an email on Friday from Tyler Welch who is looking for work in the Austin area.

His resume can be downloaded by click here:  Tyler Welch.pdf

On that note, I seem to have a long list of old job listings from retailers.  If you have ever asked us to post a job opening for you, PLEASE check the Jobs listing to see if yours is still up.  From now on, they will be valid for only 30 days unless otherwise specified.

Some have been up for a year!  That’s just too long, folks.  I understand the need to funnel in some interest, and I like to do what I can to help the TX coffee industry, but this isn’t Craigslist.

But.. if you ARE looking for employees or if you are looking for work, anyone is welcome to use TX-Coffee.com as a resource to get the news out.  TX-Coffee.com exists for the community, and as such, anyone involved should feel free to ask for something to be posted if they think it will be of benefit.

In addition, feel free to post on your own in the tx-coffee.com forums.

Tyler Welch’s information has been posted to our Jobs section.
