National Coffee Day: The Nibble
September 29: National Coffee Day
It’s official. Click Here.
Medici Notte – Caffe Medici: Austin
A signature drink menu, served Friday and Saturday nights at the West Lynn location of Caffe Medici in Austin.
I figure they can tell you more than I can, and I have heard about it a third time from a barista friend who just loved it.
DFW Jam, Sept. 28th – The Pearl Cup: Dallas
The following was sent by Ashlind McAshin via Barista Exchange.
After the successful Barista Jam with Heather Perry, my goal has been to help local coffee house owners, roasters, and baristas unite as a community. Because DFW is so large and spread out, often we all forget we can benefit from each others experience and resources. My goal for the remainder of 2009, is to highlight different cafe’s and to share knowledge and skills, using the BGA as a source of quality and knowledge.
Spark the Fire Barista Jam’s goal was to showcase Heather Perry, The Barista Guild of America, and provide a since of network among DFW coffee people. This next Jam focus will be Coffee Cupping.
Pearl Cup will be the cafe sponsor, Cuvee Coffee will be leading the cupping, and all are invited!
This is a chance to learn, taste, and network.

Clementine Coffee Bar re-named to Thunderbird: Austin
An email update informed me that Clementine Coffee Bar’s named has officially changed to Thunderbird Coffee. If you are at all familiar with Clementine, this probably didn’t come at much of a surprise. The same folks own both Thunderbird #1 and now-Thunderbird #2 (the retailer formerly known as Clementine).
According to Chris Cusack, the only things that one should expect to change/have changed are, “A sign, some T-shirts, and that’s about it. Me and Ryan still own and operate both businesses, there’s been no change in staff, and we still offer the same delicious coffee, comfortable atmosphere, and great hospitality that you’ve come to expect.”
And if you are on the Thunderbird Coffee mailing list, you probably already know all of this.
Since yesterday was “hump-day”, it’s all downhill from here looking to the weekend. Have a good one!
Apologies.. and I’m Back
Well, folks, I apologize for the massive delay in updates, but I have a good reason.
On the 5th of Sept, I was married to my now beautiful wife. The next day, we left for our week-long honeymoon.
I do hope you will forgive me.
A few updates:
The SCRBC is slated for January 14-17, 2010. It’s not in ‘09, but it is still in this year’s regional competition season.
There is a potential jam slated for later this month in the DFW area. (details to come.. I heard this in a voicemail upon returning)
There is talk of a jam in Lubbock sometime in the near future.. a collaboration between Sugar Brown’s, EspressoTrainer.com, and Grand Cafe. Nothing set in stone.. just talks. Of course, we’ll keep you updated with that as well.
Last, but not least, a little criticism:
Our honeymoon was in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I could not get a bad cup of coffee in any restaurant there. Not one. Not even the hotel restaurant, which was notoriously bad. I’m not saying that the coffee was fantastic, but it was properly brewed, not overly stale, and was balanced with no bitterness and no sourness. Is that really too much to ask for? I just plain don’t order coffee at restaurants in the states because it is almost always undrinkable.
That having been said, if you are a restaurant, and the coffee you are serving requires milk and/or sugar to be enjoyable, please.. shoot us an email via our Contact Form. We’d like to put you in touch with a local(to you) roaster who can help set your coffee program straight. Of course, if you want to do it on your own, I know of a good consultant. (wink)
From Tucson to Austin: Elixer Coffee
I saw this on Arizona Coffee about a week ago and thought folks would want to know.
Elixer Coffee has been sold, and is being relocated to Austin. I spoke with the previous owner who informed me that the new owner has had experience before. He also told me that he hopes to see what they started continue.
The most interesting aspect to Elixer’s brand image is their Studebaker truck.
I’m not sure when the move will happen, but I will do my best to keep you updated when it does.
You can also keep an eye on their website to see if they announce it when the move is made. Since Tucson is to Arizona what Austin is to Texas in many ways, I suspect that the brand will make a good fit for its new community.
