“Not Your Average Joe”(link).

Dr. Timothy Schilling, Interim Executive Director of the GCQRI(Global Coffee Quality Research Initiative) makes an appearance to let average coffee consumers know of the importance of freshly roasted coffee. A few roasters are named as good sources for their respective local areas, including Oak Cliff Coffee, Katz Coffee, Cuvee Coffee, and
AJ Coffee Company.
Maybe next time they can take it a step further and talk about proper brewing. If nothing else, at least readers of Texas Monthly will now know to look for roast dates and freshness as an indicator of quality. Cheers!

Things that, thankfully, went out with the early years of the 2000s: jean shorts, the phrase, “Whattup, dawg,” and crappy, machine-brewed corporate coffee. Things that are in with the 2010s: premium denim, locally-roasted and carefully brewed cups of joe, and independent cafes like Urban Dog Coffee. With today’s offer, $5 buys you $10to spend at Oaklawn’s hippest coffee shop.

Hand-pulled shots of espresso just tastebetter; they eliminate the bitterness and wateriness that comes from the wrong-sized grind or pressure. You can analyze the lush, creamy difference in one of their americanos, lattes, or cappuccinos. If you’re feeling hungry, indulge in a pastry, or pat yourself on the back for selecting one of Urban Dog’s fresh, healthy custom sandwiches. Those who like things on the frosty side can opt for their all-natural fresh fruit smoothies, an iced lemonade slush, or the best darn iced coffee you’ll find in Dallas.

So please, next time you’re thinking about hitting up a tired chain for a triple-venti-mocha-whatever, think about that velour sweatsuit you’ve got in the back of your closet, and the opening refrain of, “Who Let the Dog’s Out?” This is the decade for superbly-crafted, independent coffee from people who care. And that never goes out of style.

Okay, so this isn’t exactly a 50% of coupon, but it IS a $10 certificate that is being sold for only $5, so it’s basically the same thing, assuming you spend $10. https://yollar.com/dallas/offer/ <- click there for the deal!

<g:plusone href="http://tx-coffee.com/2010/10/18/starbucks-news-beer-wine/" size="medium" count="true"></g:plusone>

(From USA Today) – Here we go again.

Starbucks remakes its future with an eye on beer and wine

By Bruce Horovitz, USA TODAY

…A very different kind of Starbucks is on tap. It will serve regional wine and beer. It offers an expansive plate of locally made cheeses — served on china. The barista bar is rebuilt to seat customers up close to the coffee.

Most conspicuously, the place looks less like a Starbucks and more like a cafe that’s been part of the neighborhood for years — yet that’s “green” in design and decor. This is the calling card of independent java joints that have been eating and sipping away at Starbucks’ evening business for decades. U.S. Starbucks stores get 70% of business before 2 p.m…. more…

More signs of an identity crisis, or a case of “If you can’t beat ‘em, Join ‘em?” I just can’t help but think that Starbucks is clamoring for more attention. Is this more of the same, or will this turn into a new format? Remember Starbucks independent knock-off cafes? Like 15th Avenue Coffee & Tea? Will it last? Will it fizzle? Will this be a one-or-tw0-location-spinnoff in an effort to gain organic media attention in place of shameless advertising?

Only time will tell. Is it a good idea? I personally think that it depends on the neighborhood. You don’t want people getting drunk in your neighborhood “upscale” coffee house… do you? (perhaps a topic for a future post)

Are you are tired of Starbucks news as we are?
