In the December 2011 issue of Texas Monthly, Jason Cohen talksabout coffee quality in the consumer’s
kitchen in a feature linked to the cover article on Breakfast entitled,
“Not Your Average Joe”(link).
Dr. Timothy Schilling, Interim Executive Director of the GCQRI(Global Coffee Quality Research Initiative) makes an appearance to let average coffee consumers know of the importance of freshly roasted coffee. A few roasters are named as good sources for their respective local areas, including Oak Cliff Coffee, Katz Coffee, Cuvee Coffee, and
AJ Coffee Company.
Maybe next time they can take it a step further and talk about proper brewing. If nothing else, at least readers of Texas Monthly will now know to look for roast dates and freshness as an indicator of quality. Cheers!

Starbucks remakes its future with an eye on beer and wine

…A very different kind of Starbucks is on tap. It will serve regional wine and beer. It offers an expansive plate of locally made cheeses — served on china. The barista bar is rebuilt to seat customers up close to the coffee.
Most conspicuously, the place looks less like a Starbucks and more like a cafe that’s been part of the neighborhood for years — yet that’s “green” in design and decor. More signs of an identity crisis, or a case of “If you can’t beat ‘em, Join ‘em?” I just can’t help but think that Starbucks is clamoring for more attention. Is this more of the same, or will this turn into a new format? Remember Starbucks independent knock-off cafes? Like 15th Avenue Coffee & Tea? Will it last? Will it fizzle? Will this be a one-or-tw0-location-spinnoff in an effort to gain organic media attention in place of shameless advertising?
Only time will tell. Is it a good idea? I personally think that it depends on the neighborhood. You don’t want people getting drunk in your neighborhood “upscale” coffee house… do you? (perhaps a topic for a future post)

- Diabetes: Many studies find that coffee—decaf or regular—lowers the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, but caffeine raises blood sugar in people who already have it.
- Cancer: Earlier studies implicating coffee in causing cancer have been disproven; may instead lower the risk of colon, mouth, throat and other cancers.
- Heart disease: Long-term coffee drinking does not appear to raise the risk and may provide some protection.
- Hypertension: Caffeine raises blood pressure, so sufferers should be wary.
- Cholesterol: Some coffee—especially decaf—raises LDL, the bad kind of cholesterol.
- Alzheimer’s: Moderate coffee drinking appears to be protective.
- Osteoporosis: Caffeine lowers bone density, but adding milk can balance out the risk.
- Pregnancy: Caffeine intake may increase the risk of miscarriage and low birth-weight babies.
- Sleep: Effects are highly variable, but avoiding coffee after 3 p.m. can avert insomnia.
- Mood: Moderate caffeine boosts energy and cuts depression, but excess amounts can cause anxiety.

The article is rather long, but worth the read. There is not too much new information if you are already familiar with health benefits and harms that coffee consumption may cause. The video is hokey, and I apologize in advance for the lame jokes in the video.

So take from that what you will, but you’ve got to love seeing Progress on the list! Congrats!
