Clementine Coffee Bar re-named to Thunderbird: Austin

An email update informed me that Clementine Coffee Bar’s named has officially changed to Thunderbird Coffee.  If you are at all familiar with Clementine, this probably didn’t come at much of a surprise.  The same folks own both Thunderbird #1 and now-Thunderbird #2 (the retailer formerly known as Clementine).

According to Chris Cusack, the only things that one should expect to change/have changed are, “A sign, some T-shirts, and that’s about it. Me and Ryan still own and operate both businesses, there’s been no change in staff, and we still offer the same delicious coffee, comfortable atmosphere, and great hospitality that you’ve come to expect.”

And if you are on the Thunderbird Coffee mailing list, you probably already know all of this.

Since yesterday was “hump-day”, it’s all downhill from here looking to the weekend.  Have a good one!

Oak Cliff couple take coffee beans to customers’ doors

…Here comes coffee time and the man with the goods.

There goes Shannon Neffendorf, cruising the sleepy streets of North Oak Cliff, hanging bags of freshly roasted coffee beans at customers’ front door.

“I love delivery day and the way it makes the car smell,” says the co-owner of Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters, out and about on his pre-dawn rounds.

He and his wife, Jenni, hope this milkman-style service helps their budding business stand out as more than another joe in the world of java…

…The couple launched the venture not long after their marriage. And in just over a year, they have seen it steadily grow to include about 75 residential customers, 10 businesses and offices, and five commercial accounts that sell their beans, serve their coffee or both…

And here’s my favorite part…

…They aren’t alone in North Texas. Texas Coffee People ( tx-coffee.com) lists 12 coffee roasters in the Dallas area on its Web site, which seeks to “promote a community of serious coffee people in a state which most would consider to be a coffee wasteland…

Kudos to Shannon and Jenni (and the Oak Cliff Brand) for the article!  (and thanks for the plug, whoever was responsible)

And let’s not forget to give you Oak Cliff’s website link: http://www.oakcliffcoffee.com/

If you plan on going, Ben S. wants to know:  http://tx-coffee.com/forum/index.php?topic=234.0

Along with the SCAA show will be the World Barista Competition.  It all comes to this, folks.  The title was grasped by two men from English-speaking European countries the last two years.  Is this another trend like the Scandinavian trend we saw in years past?  Who knows.

There will be coffee parties like nobody’s business all over the place, some even held at the same time.

If you ARE going, send us your pictures! (only if you want them to be published here and to be seen by the public).

You can also post them to the Texas Coffee People Flickr group.

National Espresso Day (no, not today)

It appears as though national Espresso Day and national Cappuccino Day both occur in the same month.. and this month is not it.

November Food Holidays

From The NibbleLink

So, I realize it’s a bit late to be asking, but what did YOU do for national cappuccino day?  How about national espresso day?

Yea.. I wish I remembered too.

p.s. – to our regular readers, I apologize for the lack of a Random Picture Friday this past week.  It was skipped to keep the USBC stream at front and center, but we will resume the new tradition this coming Friday.

I hope those who took the time to watch it enjoyed what they saw.  A big congratulations to Mike Phillips of Intelligentsia, the once amateur coffeegeek turned barista champion!  (dedication does, in fact, papy off)

Opening Bell Coffee - Dallas, TX

I received an email over the weekend letting us know about Opening Bell Coffee from Pascale.  He writes,

Hi guys! Love your website and would like to be listed as a coffee retailer in Texas. We are actually celebrating our 6th year in business on March 15 :-) We have 2 locations in Dallas, TX! Thanks so much, Pascale

So, this is the first time I’ve heard of this place, but apparently they were voted Best Liquid Assets(2005), Best Coffee House(2006), and Best Atmosphere(2006) by the Dallas Observer, and Best Coffee House(2007) by D Magazine.

The Dallas Observer website has a description that reads:

Formerly Standard and Pours. What started as a yuppie coffee haunt in 2003 has turned into a pretty happening live music spot for acoustic bands and singer-songwriter types. Adding beer and wine didn’t hurt. New are DJs on Wednesday nights.

The description reminds me of what Ruta Maya was trying to do in San Antonio before they closed (I never did visit the original Austin location, so I can’t comment on that).

The have directions to their location, which you can find on their Website.

Opening Bell Coffee has been added to our List of Retailers.

Randome Picture Friday #6: Barista

Barista - The Game

Barista - Includes All that you se here!

Grande nonfat mocha with a single shot? Or tall soy cappuccino with a double-shot?

Match the beverage shown on a roll of dice to make the perfect cup and win! But wait…other players can force you to spill your drink order, or they can change the drink order and mess up your hand! Or maybe a player is closer to finishing the drink order than you are and calls a Barista challenge. (More…)
